See this thread http://paddockparadise.wetpaint.com/thread/3686897/Order+your+%22Desert+Brumby%22+video+by+Monday! and the new "Studying Track Movement" page http://paddockparadise.wetpaint.com/page/Studying+Track+Movement

I'm looking forward to watching it! I'm sure that Christina will be putting together another order -- it looks like it will be beautiful as well as being full of horse movement study results, so any of our horsey friends should like it. Maybe as a gift? The money from our group purchases of this DVD will be going toward bringing a GPS tracking collar over to the U.S. to more accurately measure the movement of horses in paddock paradise tracks. We will be involved with this project. :-)

I did some more digging and did find the information. That is SO cool..."the money from our group purchases of this DVD will be going toward bringing a GPS tracking collar over to the U.S. to more accurately measure the movement of horses in paddock paradise tracks" WOW - would I like to be a part of THAT study. If there is anything I can do from here, please let me know. I enjoy research, digging for the truth, and helping to prove ideas and theories. So how much IS a GPS tracking collar? All DVD's have been mailed to each individual that ordered in the first group. Thanks for your support to help get this GPS study underway. If anyone missed the first order deadline, we are taking orders now for a second order. The deadline is March 15th.
Please let me know if you haven't already, when your DVD arrives and give me your feedback. I thought the little booklet thats included was really nice.

"Please let me know if you haven't already, when your DVD arrives and give me your feedback. I thought the little booklet thats included was really nice."
I liked the booklet also Christina. As for some feedback on the DVD: honestly I must say that I was somewhat disappointed and also a bit shocked by it. To begin with I found it rather short (32 minutes I believe?). I had expected some more information on the daily life of the Brumbies, e.g. herd behavior, breeding, foaling, playing etc., but it was mainly focused on the horses' feet (which on the other hand is understandable knowing Christopher Pollitt is a hoof expert). The shocking part was to see how extremely thin many Brumbies are. Also I felt very sorry for 'guinea pig' Christina, who was taken out of her familiar herd in another part of Australia, having to leave her foal behind, being put in the middle of the harsh desert (which she wasn't used to at all), only to see if and how her hooves would adapt to these new circumstances. She was caught a few months later, completely on her own, extremely thin and exhausted, but well... yes... with excellent tough hooves...
My apologies if I have offended someone with this feedback, but I really ask myself if this is the kind of research we're waiting for. If you ask me: research to discover how wild horses behave in their familiar herd and surroundings? YES, excellent! But research by taking one horse out of its familiar area and expose it to extreme influences, just to discover the effect on the hooves (of which, to be honest, anyone would have expected this outcome, at least I did)? NO!
The only comforting thought for me is that, by buying this DVD, I have supported a research project which also has great aspects in it :-).

HI. First let me say, I'm sorry that you were disappointed in any way. Perhaps I can clear up a few issues.
Content - short, yes. I also would normally not ever spend $45 on a 35 min. video but I know that it is a fundraiser and I also know that to have them produced and cased and art cover, etc... is pricier than most would expect. DVD's are cheap at WalMart b/c they are mass produced by the 100's of thousands to millions. SO I can say that probably barely over 1/2 the price goes to the fundraising for the brumby research.
Content - hoofs, yes b/c this is what they are researching. They are studying the affect of movement and terrain and environment on hoof structure and health.

The brumbies are very thin in the desert region. They live a very hard life in an area that is not native to them. This area is also very overgrazed and injured b/c the horse is not a native species. It amazes me (and Brian and the research team) the tenacity and ability to adapt that the horses have. These horses are not only surviving but also breeding and herd size growing. After they have foaled they nurse these foals even when being pregnant with another foal, thus the breeding mares have the hardest time and are the thinnest.
Christine - I know that this is hard to understand but the only way that it can be determined if environment/terrain is the deciding factor on hoof shape and health is to change the environment of the horse. Was it difficult for them to do? Yes. It was over seen by their animal welfare dept to make sure none of the horses would risk death. Was it hard to leave the foal behind? Yes but it was at weanling age anyway, I believe it was about 1 years old and it would have been to hard on the foal and Christine if they had to enter a new herd. The foal would probably have been killed by a stallion and certainly would have had a harder time adapting to the new environment. The research team did all that they could... cont'd

to set her up for success by finding a stallion and herd that seemed to want to take her with them. Making sure she knew where the water was located, etc... They also took brumbies from the desert region and placed them in the other 3 regions, 1 of which Christine was from. As expected their feet are getting long and untrimmed like Christines started, they definately didn't get thin like Christine and thus have remained in the new environment for research to continue.
I do wonder what would've happened if they had relocated an entire family group, stallion and mares??? to test the feet but they probably thought it would be too much for an entire group to figure out the area, find food, shelter, fight with rivals, etc... Probably the only thing that helped Christine is that she did have a herd to travel with long enough to find her way around. I understand your concern, as did the team I believe. They have retired Christine to a simple life where all her needs are meet and she has fully recovered. She has lots of land to roam. Please realize that the Australian govt is looking at having to annihilate thousands and thousands of horses due to the strain on the environment. being a part of this research may have saved Christines life. They oversaw her in the wild b/c no one wanted her to go beyond what could be tolerated or to die. cont'd...

...They did watch her b/c they knew this would be hard on her, But this was the only way for it to be proven scientifically that environment plays a huge role on hoof condition. Christines research will hopefully transform hoof knowledge and horse keeping for millions of domesticated horses for the better as we understand more deeply the role we can play via environmental factors. What if one day peopled are enlightened enough to understand that to keep a horse in a stall 24/7 other than training time (if they even get that) is cruel and unbeneficial and could be costing them dollars in loss of hoof health & overall health?
I hope I don't come across as argumentative in any way, I just hope I can shed some light on why it was done and that they did care for Christine and truly care for horses. Thank you for buying the DVD.
Regarding the GPS Movement Study in domesticated horses that we are undertaking, you can be rest assured that we will not be taking any horses and dropping them in the desert or into any wild horse territory. ;)
Your purchase not only helps the brumby unit but will now help us further the tract fencing, slow feeding, resource placement theories.... We hope to find answers to many questions about the best horsekeeping for domesticated horses, especially those with limited acreage. Thank you for purchasing DVD's to help fund this new research.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

Hi Christina, I really appreciate your elaborate clarification of the experiment, thank you :-)! I watched the DVD a second time (before reading your reply) and could do so with a little less shocked feelings than the first time. I realise that unfortunately sometimes an animal has to be a 'guinea pig' in order to improve the lives of numerous other animals, but well... I can't help feeling sorry for the guinea pig... I guess I'm just too sensitive a person for such things ;-)...
I guess it's also hard for me - living in a an over-cultivated small country like the Netherlands - to imagine how different life and conditions can be in a country with such wild nature as Australia.
I never doubted the good intentions of everyone involved in the experiment, but then again, it's always good for researchers to have an open ear to anyone's feedback, so they won't get stuck in a kind of tunnel vision where aiming for results would justify any sort of experiment.
Again: it wasn't my intention to offend anyone and I honestly hope it wasn't taken that way. I sincerely hope that one day other horses will benefit from the Brumby research!

By the way: I would be very, very interested in another DVD (or YouTubes) that highlights the daily life of the Brumbies in a more detailed way :-)!

Thanks,
Marja

I was not offended at all. I just wanted to elaborate for hopeful understanding. I too feel sorry for Christine but am thankful for the role she played.
Thank you for ordering a DVD.
We look forward to more research.
