I have two ponies and two horses. The one horse mare is dominant and the one pony gelding used to be the boss. The mare is the boss over everybody now. The dominant pony apparently was gelded late...when the two girls are in season he turns into a bully and keeps the other gelding far away from everybody. My younger paint gelding stresses easy and ends up running all over the place upset. I think with some horses if you put mares and geldings together, you may always have one gelding that is going to be in charge when the girls are in heat. The last time I took in somebody's pony for a trial, it was vicious and went nuts trying to kick my one mare and she was not even interested in fighting. I gave the pony mare back the next day. I won't keep a horse around that is going to injure the others. Some of them won't quit either. If you have to keep the dominant gelding, I would turn him out for a few days with the other gelding alone and let them get to know each other. After a few days put them all together but not on the track. He will probably still bug the other gelding but maybe not as much. Good luck. Do you find this valuable?

I have an agressive one too who batters any horse on the track he doesnt stop he keeps going and going and going biting kicking cornering. We realised that he has serurity issues and massive trust issues i hoping that after a lot of ground work and theraphy he will be transformed, he is getting better but still ONLY with his friend who he never touches. When one horse is a bully one has to provide lots of escape area. This is why my set up works well. I had to eliminate a corner in my paddock and create new openings because of a bully horse.. Lots of escape routes eliminated any serious threats. Had I built a track the bully would have created hell in there. He's living elsewhere now. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Hard to tell what causes some horses to be bullies, Maybe they were not socialized as youngsters, or possibly bullied by another horse. Some just remain stud like. I have one who needs to be isolated occasionally for the good of the herd. When the footing is bad and the weather miserable, he goes into a separate dry lot so he can't hog the shelters. The best solution would be for him to go live somewhere where he would be on his own. Unfortunately, my husband does love to ride him, so we put up with him and separate him when necessary. He does love the mares, each in turn as they come into season. The other gelding has learned to stay clear, but I have to laugh when I see him off with one of the mares. He can be a sly guy. I have done some more research and the horse who we have who has the behvour issues is a rescue horse i tracked down his owner and got a load of history on him, he was broken at a young age and kept alone and was a pony club pony, he had shoes at this point when he got navicular. He was dumped he then spent 7 years with another lady and made a sound attachment to Silver my rescued horse, they both were then given to a rescue center for rehoming thats when i got them, so my bully horse has had no chance to ever develop social skills in a herd, he is learning and getting better, but i think his problem is that he thinks the others are gonna steal his friend. Its hard but he is making improvments.

We just bought 5 acres of lush field and will require 2 seperate tracks as well- I haven't built the barn yet (or set up the track ideas)...but I'm thinking in the end it will look somewhat like two 8 side by side. I'm wondering how important it is to have a dry lot in addition to the track. We live in Vermont and have some serious mud seasons- but I hate to go to all the work of a track and have them standing in a paddock next to the barn. Do you find this valuable?

As previously mentioned I have 4 areas side by side. #4 is closed for the winter. Had to big round bales brought in today, one was set up on the hill of #1 and the other was set at the far end of #3. The horses are getting plenty of exercise moving between the bales and then come for water. The hill helps keep them more fit. Today the two were full of the sillies, racing and bucking. More or less the track IS your dry lot. If there are muddy areas that is ok, so long as there are also dry areas. It doesn't hurt a horse to travel through mud, as long as they aren't forced to stand in it 24/7.

Good luck. My track is officially split in 2 and I have 2 herds that live seperately, 4 in each. I have feed at the back of the track and the middle of the track with water at the front. They move more than if they were in a pen.
