Round Bale Options
Sorry about the failure with the canvas. KIDS!! I put an old horse blanket on the bale under the net and it works very well. Been at it a year, and not a hole yet. If the bale is small enough, you can even do up the chest strap on that blanket and will hold better, but the net holds it well all by itself. Since the blanket is under the net, the horses can't get at it and does a great job of keeping the bale dry in rain. It also makes the horses eat lower to the ground. Three large-sized hockey nets laced together covered the whole bale beautifully.
I DO like your base idea, though the box doesn't look like it will be able to take much more. My plan is to (no heavy machines to help) roll the bale into a box with a drainable floor in it. No strain on the box and horses not able to scratch on it and topple it out of the box into the mud kind of thing, which is what happens when the bale is sitting on a skid. (I have plastic moulded skids with no nails.) The horse blanket has worked so well that I am no longer considering building a roof over this box. With the blanket, which fits over the flat side of the bale better, I put the flat side down on the ground. Works well, but I'd just like to be able to roll the bale into the box and leave it in rolled position, so I need to find out how that blanket fits the bale that way. I also will be choosing a permanent site and will be looking to make that box heavy and stay there. Try an old horse blanket under the net...works like a charm. Hope this helps!
