Hay net comparison chart *update*
Today the hay net comparison chart was re-arranged to list everything by hole size for easier comparison. Products with the smallest feeding openings are now at the top of the chart, with the larger-holed varieties at the bottom of the chart. The SMHNs having the same size openings are listed from smallest capacity to largest.
At least, that's the idea -- this update turned out to be about a day's work, so I hope that it comes in handy! There were also a couple of additions, and deletions of products no longer available. If you get the chance to look it over, let me know of any errors or omissions. Thanks!

durability of hockey hay nets in winter
Thanks for that information, Terri. I added it to the hay net comparison chart page: http://paddockparadise.wetpaint.com/page/Hay+Net+Comparison+Chart>.
It seems to be working quite well for the Akal Ranch; I hope you have good luck with it too. Where will you put it?
On a related tangent, I wonder if the openings in the barrier netting are ever-so-slightly larger than the openings in the 5 mm goal netting. Just because the 'rope' is thicker -- I wonder if they measure actual hole size on the inside of the rope, or if they measure hole size by how far apart the center of each corner is from each other... ~JoAnn

hay 24/7 for two horses?
Hi Vida, the answers are: 2% of their body weight per day, and yes to both net filling questions. You are very, very close to having a perfect slow feeding for them. It is so much better for them to have hay available 24/7, and with slow feeders most horses will self regulate their hay intake to about 2% of their body weight after an adjustment period. However, some don't and their hay has to be rationed for them.
A rationed amount of hay can be delivered at various speeds, though! If the horses eat more than they should in a 24-hour period, it means the feeder isn't slow enough, and that can be adjusted. :-) What type of nets are you using? Often, the problem can be solved by doubling the nets, one inside the other. There are also nets with different opening sizes available -- check out the hay net comparison chart if you're interested: http://paddockparadise.wetpaint.com/page/Hay+Net+Comparison+Chart
Let us know if that helps at all. :-) ~JoAnn~

Hockey Netting Help
"I have now purchased 6 "small mesh hay nets" very sturdy for $7.95 at Cheshire horse. I can fit about 15 lbs in each. Beautiful, horses love them, holes are small enough that the minis don't get their hooves stuck and my big guy didn't tear them apart. No mess no waste." Thanks for this info! I updated the comparison chart with the lower price available at Cheshire Horse; the Shires site still lists them at $9.95. It's good to have options. ;-) http://paddockparadise.wetpaint.com/page/Hay+Net+Comparison+Chart
Would love to have you upload a picture of yours in use. The holes are a little bit bigger than the hockey nets were, right? Do your horses eat from them at the same speed?
Did you have the Canadian nets or goal nets from Arizona? Could the nets have been street hockey goals rather than made for ice hockey? I'm just surprised to hear about the hockey net being less durable than the Shires net. Had heard earlier that the Shires lasted only a couple of months. ~JoAnn~

Chick's saddlery Net - anyone tried it?
"I ordered several and liked them so much, I ordered 10 more! Only took about a week for delivery. These nets hold a lot more hay than the Miller's SMHN, which I also use." On the hay net comparison chart on this website, it says that the Chick's net has 2" holes, while the Miller's has 1-9/16". .Are they actually the same size? I cannot go any bigger than Miller's, since I already have to double net those in order to slow my horse down even just a notch... Even doubled, she goes through hay too quickly... Thanks!

AZ Supply's hockey netting has smaller holes than Canadian Tire's nets
I just updated the Hay Net Comparison Chart to move Canadian Tire's hockey nets into the 1.5" group. It had been listed as a one-inch product but someone was kind enough to send me a sample, and it actually has 1-1/2" holes. That means the Arizona Sports Supply hockey goal netting has slightly smaller openings and therefore makes a slightly more challenging hay feeder, as well as being much more durable and heavyweight.

Drover or Shires SMHN
Do check out our comparison chart page on the wiki--it will remove much of the mystery in choosing a smhn. :-) http://paddockparadise.wetpaint.com/page/Hay+Net+Comparison+Chart
Are you currently using a metal grid slow feeder? The Dover/Smith Brothers/Millerharness smhn is hard to beat for price and good speed in slow hay feeding, having 4cm openings. The Shires has significantly larger openings (2") and so won't slow the horses as much. ~JoAnn~

SMHN by Brandi
Folks report that the Arizona Sports Supply hockey nets have 4 cm (1.5 inch) holes - the same as the Smith Bro. net. The nets from Canadian Tire are reported to be one inch, so smaller, but only available in the store at Canada. Brandi's nets have holes 4 cm apart also, BUT the thicker rope from which they are constructed narrows the feeding hole so that it is effectively smaller.
JoanneNL's shrimp netting is one inch. http://paddockparadise.wetpaint.com/page/Challenge+Feeders
I believe that Nibble Net will custom make any size strapping grid. Most of the comparison info is on the following page: http://paddockparadise.wetpaint.com/page/Hay+Net+Comparison+Chart

Introducing the "Snarfometer" feeding speed rating
The wiki's Hay Net Comparison Chart now shows an expected challenge rating on each of the small mesh options listed. Think of it as "Speed Now After Restricted Feeding" if it helps. ;-) Since we're slow feeding in order to STOP our horses from SNARFING down their hay, it sounded like an appropriate name to me. ;-)
I added introductory Snarf ratings on a scale of one to ten. "Ten" is the greatest challenge possible (and corresponding slowest eating speed); "one" indicates very little change from loose hay. Most horses use slow feeder netting between 5--7 on the Snarf-o-meter. http://paddockparadise.wetpaint.com/page/Hay+Net+Comparison+Chart
Comments appreciated! If we can define hay feeding challenge level this way, we will be able to use Snarf-o-meter to rate expected eating speed across all manner of slow feeders which can otherwise be difficult to compare.

Eating time
" I wonder how long it takes your horses to eat their hay with slow feeders compared to when you didn't use hay feeders. It would be interesting to compare our different results. And I think it would be very good if people maybe could add this information to the description of their feeders too. " Thank you for the suggestion. We could probably add eating time information to the hay net comparison chart, or make another chart dedicated to eating times for all kinds of slow feeders (soft and hard-sided). I will keep that in mind and try to add it, unless someone else wants to create that?
I will try to figure out the answers for my horses, and add that information as soon as I can.
You have a very talented slow-feeding horse, Asa! How long has she been eating from the small-mesh hay nets?

Do you have to scroll to the right to see the whole page?
For further comparison, the Hay Net Comparison Chart http://paddockparadise.wetpaint.com/page/Hay+Net+Comparison+Chart
is currently at 850 pixels, and the tips box under it is at 1024 pixels.
Which width works best for you, or does it even matter? I'd like everyone to be able to see each page without needing to scroll to the right.
