Trees on Track

Hi there, Am new on site. Apologies if my questions have already been covered in previous discussions. We are setting up a property in Hahndorf, South Australia and want to set up a section of it with a PP track. The area that would be best for the first section of track is parallel to the boundary fence and quite a lot of it has 30 year old radiata pine trees on it. Not much grows underneath the trees - except the most amazing variety of mushrooms - and the reason I ask this is because I notice a lot of the tracks people feature on the site are clear. Are trees an issue? Does the track need to be clear? Have I missed some very obvious point in the PP book?

Avoid These Mistakes

At first glance, this SMHN hardware looks fine, but can you spot the potentially dangerous link? See this blog. AVOID spring clips and carabiners.	T-posts are not sturdy enough to use as hay net anchors. See this discussion. When clipping a SMHN to a post, use one that would be large and sturdy enough for tying a horse. Also let the net bottom swing free to avoid creating a leg loop.
Brittle bucket lid. After I drilled the 1.5" hole for a skewer stick, I tried removing the lid but it shattered. It had been sitting unused in the garage, subject to temperature extremes but not sunlight for 3 years.	This feeder actually works very well. But my horse pawed through the webbing in a week. She's gone through 2 of these so far. -Joanne
Hockey Hay Net after 4 days use and many repairs (repairs have been removed for picture)	Initial wear and tear on a recycled tennis net. Has been turned over and has since lasted another 5 months.
This is a small-mesh hay net after being used on the ground as a hay pillow for three days. Since then, I have not had further net damage, and others have reported their horses also being gentler on nets after about a week of getting used to them. ~JoAnn	Tips easily. Horses can't get all the hay from between the slats. Lid works as a feeder tray. Crib works as a water bucket holder or to keep Nose-It feeder toy out of mud.
Timothy hay can't bend to get through this tiny one-inch grid.	Recycled dog kennel failed testing as a horse hay feeder.
Heavy duty fish nets: Horses chewed holes in the one-inch netting within a couple of months.	A small hole in the canvas barrier on this round bale was quickly ripped open repeatedly, even after being sewn closed with hay string. Don't use dry rotted old canvas! (Yes, another no-brainer.) Horses are designed to process roughage 24 hours a day. As Jessica Jahiel says, horses are grazers, nibblers, trickle-feeders.

Jaime Jackson points out that wild horses expend time and energy finding their food. He calls unlimited lush grass a "founder trap."

Slow feeder designs permit horses to eat a controlled amount of feed, constantly. The hay never runs out. Mealtime
anxiety disappears. (Note: this concept works best with grass hay)

Some choke-prone horses can eat dry hay cubes or concentrates from feeder toys in place of requiring soaked feed.

Horses seem to enjoy the puzzle! Some prefer to eat from a restricted free-choice hay feeder even when loose hay is available.

SAFETY NOTE: All traditional hay net wisdom says to hang nets higher; Jessica Jahiel's archives specifically state that even small-mesh hay nets should not be down low. HOWEVER, I think the reason is because hay nets have traditionally been tied with long looping rope that could entrap a leg. Also, shod horses could catch a shoe in the netting. My horses are barefoot -- I would not recommend low hanging small-mesh hay nets for a horse with shoes. Their hooves are also significantly larger than the 4-centimeter holes of my small-mesh hay nets. This page shows alternative closing methods to replace the tie string. Use double-end snaps to clip them onto an eye bolt. Do NOT use non-locking carabiners or spring links. See the Pawsplus blog for further explanation.

My own experiments with ground-level small-mesh hay nets (since 2006) for my three horses have gone very well, with no tangling at all.
These are my recommendations:
- Use your own judgment about introducing low-hanging small-mesh hay nets to your horses.
- Keep traditional large-hole hay nets up high if you must use them. They are not slow feeders, and they are not the nets discussed on this site.
- Always eliminate the tie string from ground-level small-mesh hay nets.
- Make sure your horse's hooves will not fit through the mesh (this may be a concern for minis).
- If your horse has shoes, have them removed before using a ground-level small-mesh hay net. Low nets are for barefoot horses only.

If it's cost for capacity you are looking for, this is a great option for those who need a larger net but already have enough craft projects. ;-) They are available at FreedomFeeder.com, Smartpak.com, Dover Saddlery.com and many other retail outlets listed at Freedomfeeder.com Dealer section.

This is the Freedom Feeders Trailer/Mini net. Available for $30. Drawstring style with a break-away carabiner.

In the photo to the left, the Extended Day net ($50) is shown looped around a fence rail. It now comes with break-away carabiner clips attached to the upper corners and comes with additional replacement clips and cord to tie around a fence or tree on either side if you choose.

This photo shows the Extended Day net hanging by the ropes supplied separately with the feeder. It now comes with break-away carabiner clips on the upper corners instead of the rope. One side is on the rail, the other is through an eye bolt. The net is meant to stay in place, though--you bring the hay to the net, due to the weight when filled.

Here is the Full 120# Bale Net ($87). You can tie it into a water tub, stand it in a stall or throw it on the ground like a hay pillow. You can also set it up in the "mail slot" fashion and keep adding hay every few days if you don't want to move a full bale around. This net really gives you Freedom from filling smaller nets. Once transitioned onto controlled free choice hay, a 120# bale should last an average 1000# horse 5-7 DAYS. Now that's FREEDOM!

And this photo shows the carabiners supplied to close the envelope-type top. We recommend replacing these with slide-bolt type clips ("dogleash" clips), as some of us have had negative experiences with carabiners.

Please note: As with all hay nets, the Freedom Feeder should be hung at a sufficient height to avoid the risk of entanglement. To withstand the pulling and chewing associated with a hay net in use, the nylon mesh is extremely durable and will not give under pressure. As a result, it’s important to ensure the hay net is safely secured and won’t become loose as the hay is consumed.

It is also a close-up of the mesh. It is made from shrimp fishing net and the joins are woven instead of knotted. This netting will also hold up to soaking for IR horses. After 48hrs the can had cracks in it from the horses pushing and using it as a scratching post. However it was inexpensive and I learned I like the net on the outside because the hay slid easily for loading and feeding. I'm on the quest for blue barrels since they are made of much more robust plastic.

Reviewing the New & Improved Nose-It!

	The time has finally come that we can easily fill a pellet dispenser out on the turnout track. That's it in a nutshell! I've been using the original Nose-It! feeder toys for years now, and they entertain the horses, hold up great, and stretch out five minutes worth of pellets to at least half an hour. I didn't see how it would be possible to improve the performance of this neat little feeder toy. When the designer, Joanie Johnston, told me that she was planning to dish the wall containing the opening, I feared the change would increase the difficulty level too much for my horses. These two changes cancel each other out in terms of how difficult it is for the horse to dispense the contents. In other words, it works exactly like the original! Yay! Round Bale Feeder Box located at the far end of a "C"-shaped track paddock. The tarp roof is stretched across a PVC beam and sandwiched between edge boards and a 2x3. (tightened up after photo was taken) To load it, I spread the Texas Hay Net across the plywood floor, and use the red "X" in the netting to center it. Then roll the bale off the pickup, and draw the opening together with a 1/4" rope. The walls have a half-inch gap all the way around the bottom for water run-off. There are four 4x4 skids underneath. The Texas Hay Net is large enough to surround the largest round bale. I now have a 1600# bale in this feeder box inside a Texas Hay Net. Because my horses require extra slow hay feeding speed (8 on the 'Snarfometer'), I now also use an Equinet large bale net over the top of this arrangement, clipped to the outside of the box walls. 	Yesterday I compared the NN 1.25 with my Brandi smhn, and at the end of the day there was about half a pound of hay left in Brandi's rope net whereas the 1.25" NibbleNet was empty except for a few partial stalks of hay; less than a mouthful.

I think that the protruding knots in the rope net make it less inviting to eat from than the smooth soft webbing of the NibbleNet. Rope construc- tion also progressively reduces the size of the openings as the amount of hay within decreases, unlike webbing slow feeders.	I close the top of this small rope smhn with a bucket strap. The Brandi nets are not currently available, but are a potential arts & crafts project for anyone so inclined...

Introducing the "Snarf-o-meter" feeding speed rating!

The wiki's Hay Net Comparison Chart now shows an expected challenge rating on each of the small mesh options listed. Think of it as "Speed Now After Restricted Feeding" if it helps. ;-) Since we're slow feeding in order to STOP our horses from SNARFING down their hay, it sounded like an appropriate name to me. ;-) To illustrate my idea, I added introductory Snarf ratings on a scale of one to ten. "Ten" is the greatest challenge possible (and corresponding slowest eating speed); "one" indicates very little change from loose hay. Living LARGE on a Shoestring T	This Frankenstein's Monster of a round bale cover was recently our temporary slow feeding cover for Round Bale #2. A canvas throw cloth was tucked into one side of the 4' x 4' feeder box before we rolled the bale onto the box from the back of our pickup truck. Then it was pulled up to cover as much of the bale as possible. I used a hole punch to make holes to sew the canvas to the hockey net material. The bottom edge of the hockey netting is laced to a ratchet strap (which doesn't last long; the ratchet strap was soon pulled up off the top edge of the box). Overall, it functioned all right, until the horses simply tore large gaping holes to eat freely through this apparently dry-rotted canvas! I have ordered an easy-keeper round bale net from Equinets, and am looking forward to using the new net to cover Round Bale #3 next week. Check back for my review. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The view from Ally's feeding alley. The hockey nets were taken from the doubled hay tree hockey net feeder. I will again use this plywood feeder box as a round bale stand once the Equinet arrives. Although the ratchet strap around the top saved it from complete destruction under the first two round bales, the first one had landed flat-side down instead of nestling into the box with a rounded side down. We heard a loud crack when it landed, so obviously (audiously?) there was some damage done to the screwed-together feeder box. But now I also want to find out how long we can make it last... Even before the netting was added, this project was doomed by a hole in the canvas. But the ratchet strap worked wonders to keep the feeder box from flying apart when the bale descended upon it. The switch to round bales happened here because suddenly, it became the only hay available. This was a homemade stop-gap measure to help me evaluate our need for a round bale slow feeder.
	And a closeup of the actual shoestring! Or rather, survival cord being laced through the canvas and hockey goal netting. Lacing along the side of the dropcloth with a hem seemed sturdy enough, and I believe this would hold up with a decent piece of canvas. This setup worked for us about three days, with repair to the holes on the canvas side of the bale a couple of times. I mistakenly had thought the horses would leave it alone if they couldn't see the hay through the canvas, but I was wrong! So if you try this concept, be sure the canvas is sound.

Loving the Newer Spreader! http://www.newerspreader.com/ Trying to find time to do a proper blog entry... Also had to buy a round bale before I decided on which netting to use around it -- what a mess! Jewel is in hog heaven with free access to her hay, for now.

Has anyone tried adding a milk cow to their paddock paradise setup? I know someone has a goat in with their horse. A cow would need so much more grass (especially since my version is essentially a dry lot loop). And can they even eat from SMHN? Brandi once said something about her nets being tough enough to be used with her calves, but would a grown cow even bother using one? I was thinking about how it would work to put the cow on grass in the center field during the day, and in with the horses on the track at night. Possibly next year... Well, what I need to do is find time to READ (ha ha) I already bought a book on keeping a family cow, so some of the answers will probably be found there, too.

	Arrow and Inka, testing their new feeder. Rebar is spaced 2" and inside has two slanting pieced of wood. I bungeed them so the wood will press against the rebar so the horses have a continues flow of hay. Both together eat one bale of hay a day, in the adjustment fase. I hope they slow down soon, they poop up a storm!!!! Greetings from Anchorage, Alaska.

We love our Equine Hay Baskets, and also the idea of slow feed nets (like the Freedom Feeder I use in stalls). After trying several different things, I've come up with a way to attach a net to the basket and make an easily moved, easily filled, easily cleaned, durable slow feeder than will hold up to four bales at a time. I took some pictures and will try to describe it here.

You can order the Equine Hay Basket thorough TSC or Lowe's or other places. A single person can move it around, pop out the black liner for cleaning, and fill and attach the netting we use. It drains well and is ventilated, but our horses would remove the hay and waste it when it was uncovered. The net solves this.

I ordered hock goal netting from Arizona Sports Equipment, and also ordered lacing cord there. I measured the inside of the hay basket from lip to lip running down the inside of the basket, across the bottom, and back up, to allow ample netting to let the horses eat the hay all the way to the bottom of the feeder. The lacing cord is used to attach the netting.

I went to a local fabricator and had him make a steel hoop out of tubing about the same size as the feeder is made out of. It sits within the lip of the feeder so horses can move it a bit without getting a nose under it.

I attached the hay netting to the hoop using the lacing, hopefully you can see that in the picture. Netting is easily removed to wash if needed, though we just occasionally take the netting still on the hoop to the wash rack and blast it with hot water. It helps to have two people to move the hoop with net attached.

Four bucket straps are attached to the ring, evenly spaced around it to correspond to the legs on the feeder. You can find the bucket loops all kinds of places.

The ring with net is placed over the filled hay basket. The bucket strap hangs down the inside of the basket liner, slips through a vent hole in the side of the liner, and snaps onto a cord I've tied to the top of a leg of the hay basket.

For easy filling by one person, unsnap two bucket straps from the feeder legs (leave them attached to the hoop). Flip the hoop up and over like a lid. It will stay attached by the two remaining bucket straps, but the rim and net will be out of the way. Fill with hay, flip hoop and net back into place, snap two snaps, and your hay chores are done for several days. (This pictures shows a single bale, but we often fit 4 bales in at a time. The net holds the hay in so no waste, and the horses have access to hay 24/7.)

Our horses love the feeders. We love the feeders. The nets have been in service with this system for three months, 24/7, with no problems.
Hope this will help some of you. It's not the cheapest feeder out there, but I've been using the hay basket for years and love having an easy, durable, slow feeder based on it. These components should all last for years.
