This page is to gather different movement study results together in one place for easy comparison. The first chart is from the Australian Brumby Research Unit. Their data was gathered with specially designed GPS collars which measured movement over the course of a week at a time. Other charts show information gathered by wiki members using standard portable GPS units which measure movement for up to 10 hours at a time, and also by wiki members charting movement through visual observation.

Horse Name Average Speed Total Distance Traveled Duration of GPS Tracking and Stats Projected 24-hour Distance
Jan 27, 2010 South 0.2 mph 0.4 miles 2 hours.
Turned on while they were eating grain. Filled feeders full of hay and spread some on track. So most of this timing is their heaviest eating time of the day. 6 yr old mare that has a slight abcess on a back foot, so she's not traveling more than absolutely necessary to get her meals.
3.84 miles/day
Jan 29, 2010 Lodi
1.2 miles 10 hours.
Well after they have been grained and almost 2 hours into the freshly filled hay feeders. The Garmin played the whole 10 hours between turn on and shut off, so I could see that she walked up front for water 3 times, and to the back feeder 3 times, making the central feeder home base.
2.88 miles/day
Feb 3, 2010 Bita
1 mile 3 hours.
Rain and all, I put it on Bita yesterday morning. When I got home last night I found she had stopped it at 1 hr and 6 min. :( I started it again and proceeded to go about my chores and dinner. Went back out before bed to retrieve it with 2 more hours of data.
7.44 miles/day
Feb 5, 2010 South
2.2 miles 10 hours.
Her abcess is gone. 2.2 miles in 10 hours. That works out to 5.28 miles in a 24 hour period. I could be happy with that. On top of it, her owner rides her at least 3 times a week, sometimes for day long trail rides.
5.28 miles/day
Jan 31.2010 Roy
1.18 miles 7 hours.
6 yr old gelding, just returned home. Middle of the afternoon, so no heavy feeding time. He never travels around the track.

Costalotta Farm 2 From CyndiB at Costalotta Farm in Ontario: My lead mare Azalea travels the track with the lead gelding Taxi. My other four travel the track as a separate herd. They are my pony herd. She starts out at the lower shelter where I grain them, then she heads up the top shelter where the Amazing Graze is, after playing with that she goes across to the hay nets at the top of my field, then she goes to the back hay nets, when she is bored there she heads up to the Likit and then to the hay net at the back of the top shelter. When she is finished there she heads down to the water where the garmin shuts off. It is quite icy here so this may be slowing her movement. Property is 19 acres. Click the date link to replay the actual travel pattern.

Feb 10, 2010 Azalea
1.11 miles 9 hours. Icy conditions. Azalea is a 12 year old 3/4 TB 1/4 Belgian. She is the boss mare of both herds but she and Taxi tend to travel the track seperately from the pony herd. She is 16HH. 3.6 miles
Feb 13, 2010 Azalea
1.81 miles Just over 11 hours. Icy conditions. Once again she starts at the lower shelter where I grain them, then she gets a drink and then heads up to the top shelter, hoping I'll refill the Amazing graze. She then heads to the hay nets along the top of the field, then over to the hay trough where she spends quite a bit of time. Then she heads back to the top shelter, back to the haynets and when done there heads to the back of the PP where there are more haynets, when she has had enough of them she heads to the haynets at the back of the shelter and then down to the water for a quick drink then its back to the lower shelter to wait for her morning grain. By the looks of it, they circle my track once and have yet to use the one outside track. I know this track does get some use sometime as there is a beaton down trail. 3.6 miles
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/24898596 Fly
2.64 miles 17 hours. She did about 13 hours before it turned off. I turned it back on after charging and got an additional 4 hours before she somehow shut it off.off again. Fly is a 10 year Hackney cross 12.2 HH and 2nd in comand of the pony herd. She goes to the water twice.twice... The pony herd does seem to use the two outside tracks that Azalea did not go on. Huh! They must try to stay out of the horses way. She also does a quick turn around in one spot where I am sure she has run into the horses and has made a hasty retreat. Interesting. 3.75 miles
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/26864706
Anneka
3.59 miles 14 hours. Anneka is the leader of the pony herd. She is a 18 year old welsh cross, 13.2 HH. As you can see she makes good use of the track and travels the furthest distance. Now the track is not icy their movement has definely improved. 6.15 miles
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/26864665
Taxi
2.33 miles 12 hours 20 minutes. Taxi is the big boss of both herds. He is a 11 year old Quarter Horse 15.2HH. He makes good use of the track but does not travel near as far as the pony herd. It is looking like the low equine, may travel the furthest... 4.5 miles
