| Tip: It takes about a week for many horses to get used to eating from a small-mesh hay net. Until they are used to it, they may damage the net. A few horses may develop chapped lips during this time. To avoid net damage, consider trying any of these options: - Introduce slow feeding with a larger-hole net (over 4 cm) before switching to a more efficient hay net. - Provide some loose hay along with the SMHN for the first few feedings. - Fluff up the hay inside the net; pull some hay strands through a few of the holes.  As a general guideline, choose a SMHN having hole sizes between 3.5 - 4 cm (1-3/8" to 1-5/8").Look for options rated from 4 to 7 on JoAnn's Snarfometer. Owners of IR (diagnosed insulin-resistant) horses may want to consider a NibbleNet 1.25", Hay Pocket, or Busy Horse Extra Slow feeder. (Anything rated 7 or 8 on the Snarfometer) These slightly more challenging feeders will be more efficient at slowing hay consumption, but may require extra steps for transition to slow feeding. |

I could not be more satisfied with the hole size and texture of these webbing bags. However, please don't buy one of these if your horse is not already an expert at a slow feeder bag with larger holes. My horses need to have a slower than normal slow feeder, and this is one of my favorites! Except when I have a round bale, I use this every day. It is easy to load and carry hay from the feed room. The vinyl sides do eventually show superficial cracking through the color layer, but they have held up for me without any rips. These are designed to be hung up on a wall or hay tree post, but NibbleNet has other products (with feeding openings in all sizes) designed for use down at ground level.
