Jack's hay feeder in Australia

Feeder, Phase 3
Sarah's feeder in BC. Uses two 48" panels of an exercise pen in V-formation. Plywood and scrap used for other materials. Holds about 40lbs of hay.

Sarah's new feeder in BC
This is Sarah's new feeder in BC (see above for version 1.0). The frame is a Behlen hay rack clamped between two posts driven 24" down. The sides are lined with ex-pen panels, and the top is made of ex pen panels. We now have two like this.
Chance with the original feeder
Chance on Thunder Mountain now prefers hockey nets.
Made from a liquid storage/ shipping container. Right now we have fencing attached to make holes of about 2 x 4. It does slow them down quite a bit

Arrow and Inka, testing their new feeder. Rebar is spaced 2" and inside has two slanting pieced of wood. I bungeed them so the wood will press against the rebar so the horses have a continues flow of hay. Both together eat one bale of hay a day, in the adjustment fase. I hope they slow down soon, they poop up a storm!!!! Greetings from Anchorage, Alaska.

bumblesmama Using metal? 1 Aug 31 2010, 9:21 AM EDT by SpottedTApps

I was wondering the same thing that the OP asked. Any issues with getting cuts on metal, freezing? Also wondering about hay getting wet during rain in these feeders; how is that managed? My girls are out 24/7 and I do not have a barn; so outdoor options that protect feeding from getting too wet is good.

pphdonks Question about using metal for the slow feeding 8 Jan 25 2010, 7:04 AM EST by pphdonks

I have been using the small mesh hay bags from Smith Brothers for a couple of years now. Love them....but with 20 donkeys to feed they can be extremely time consuming. I really like these ideas but am curious what issues you have with getting cuts on lips or "freezing" lips to metal, etc. Thanks!

Are two of the most beautiful horses I have ever seen! I hope they enjoy their feeder. Is the rebar 2" apart from center to center, or are the openings 2"? It looks very sturdy and so nicely color coordinated with their shelter ;-) If you have more pictures of it we can make another subpage to show them all. In the meantime I put a link to the full-size versions of your pictures for folks to see by clicking on your pictures on this page.
